Guided Reading

We will be starting Guided Reading in January in Kindergarten. Guided reading is when educators/ parents support children in reading texts that they are unable to read independently. The focus is to help children to develop concepts, skills, and strategies to learn and apply in other reading situations. Some things that I do when introducing a story is use prior knowledge. For example I discuss building a snowman before the story The Snowman by Joy Cowley. This can help the child connect and be familar with the story .I talk about directions of words ( left to right). I use my finger to match spoken to written words. I reinforce high frequency sight words.I help with difficult words. I look forward to a reading journey with my students. I hope you have fun reading at home with your child. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please let me know.Children learn to read and then read to learn.
